THE SALKANTAY TREK TO MACHU PICCHU

Explore the trail To Machu Picchu , by passing through the impressive Salkantay mountain, surrounded by deep valleys and breathtaking views. You can enjoy the beautiful Andes, habit to many animals (alpacas and condors), orchids and so many different types of fruit trees.
This is the best alternative route to Machu Picchu in case the Inca Trail is booked out.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO - SORAYPAMPA - HUMANTAY LAKE - SOYROCOCHA

Very early we will leave Cusco (by Van), passing through the towns of Izcuchaca and Limatambo and after 3 hours of journey we reach Mollepata (3850 masl). we will stop for last minute supplies or to use the restrooms at a local restaurant. We will continue our journey to Soraypampa (3850 meters above sea level), our trek starting point. We will meet with our support staff, who will load the equipment on horses and mules. Around 9:00 a.m., we will begin our hike toward Humantay Lake, a marvelous lake in the mountains, (3 hours hike).
We will have a panoramic view of the majestic Salkantay, other mountains covered with snow, and the Valley of Apurimac River. Around 1:00p.m., we will have a Peruvian lunch in Salkantaypampa. After lunch we will hike to Soyrococha, our first campsite, where the tents will be ready for you as well as your dinner.

DAY 2: SOYROCOCHA - PASO SALKANTAY - HUAYRAC MACHAY - CHAULLAY

After breakfast, we will start the hike going up to the Salkantay pass. On day 2 we cross the Salcantay Pampas and then we get to the highest point of the pass, which includes the Humantay Glacier, located over 4,650m. Here the landscape is rocky and icy and the views indescribable. After a rest we will continue downhill for about 2 hours until reaching Huayracmachay, where we will have a well-deserved rest and lunch. After a trek of approximately 3 hours, we will arrive to our camp in Challway 2920 masl. We will then have dinner and camp overnight in the área of Chaullay.

DAY 3: CHAULLAY - LA PLAYA - SANTA TERESA

After Breakfast we will start what is an unforgettable day, characterized by a completely nature change. We will explore snow covered mountains and see a large variety of flora and fauna. Later we will pass an Andean Community before making our descend toward humid climate, a complete contrast to the last days. We follow the Santa Teresa river and there is a microclimate which is conducive to produces lots of orchids, according to experts the most beautiful in the world. We will arrive to La Playa and from there we go by van to our camping site located in Santa Teresa. There passengers who have already coordinated a visit to the thermal baths may go.

DAY 4: SANTA TERESA - LLAQTAPATA - HYDRO ELECTRIC - AGUAS CALIENTES

After breakfast we head to the archaeological ruins of Llactapata, which was an important rest stop on the journey to Machu Picchu. Here we are provided with a view of the Machu Picchu mountain and other surrounding peaks. We will enjoy time to relax and later descend for approximately two hours to reach Hydroelectric plant (1870 m). After lunch we take the train to Aguas Calientes (approx 2000m), here there is also the opportunity of going to the thermal baths located 1.2km from the town. Here we spend the night in a hotel.

DAY 5: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO

Early in the morning the guide will pick you up from the hotel in order to go by bus to one of the seven wonders of the new world :Machupicchu. We will spend approximately two hours exploring Machu Picchu while our guide explains to us all of the different parts constituting the “Lost City of the Incas”. We also have free time to explore the ruins by yourself, possibility to walk the final part of the Inca Trail or climb the Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu mountains. From there we will take a bus to Aguas Calientes and in the afternoon we'll go by train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and from there we´ll take a van to Cusco.

TIME OF PERMANENCE INSIDE MACHU PICCHU:

  • The time inside Machu Picchu will be a maximum of four (4) hours from the time of the entry until the departure, between 6:00 and 4:00 p.m., according to the respective registration (it closes at 5:30 p.m.). Except for the tickets that combine with alternate routes 1: Waynapicchu Mountain and 2: Machupicchu Mountain, they can spend 6 hours.
  • The number of tickets to be sold by schedules will be established according to the capacity of Machu Picchu and the use of alternate roads that allow entry.
  • Re-entry to Machupicchu is not allowed, except for reasons of force majeure.
  • The breach of the time of permanence (4 hours) generates the additional charge of another extra ticket, otherwise the immediate withdrawal of the tourists and guides, this with the support of the authorities.

  • In our shared services, we will pick-up our clients from your hotel as long as it is located in the downtown.
  • In our shared services, at the end of the tour, we leave our clients in a place close to the Main Square, because is easier go walking instead the car for the traffic jam. If your hotel is far from the downtown, take some cash with you in order to take a taxi.
  • Pick-up and drop off times are referential, this will depend on the traffic that can be found in the streets or delay of the other clients, our assistant will be on time but sometimes the transport could delay a few minutes.
  • Tips for guides are not included nor are they obligatory.
  • We reserve the trains from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo or Poroy at certain times based on availability, and then plan the transfers for those times. If the passenger changes their train ticket at last minute, transfers from Ollantaytambo or Poroy to Cusco can no longer be provided as it is a collective service and transfers are scheduled for the hours initially booked.
  • For shared services, we do not give bathroom tents, we will only give this service on private tours. On the other hand, for the Inca Trail tours 4 days, in each camp there are bathrooms provided by the INC (National Institute of Culture), these bathrooms are free. In many other places, there are residents' toilets, which are bathrooms where you have to pay.
    We recommend to bring your own toilet paper.
  • Campsites can be changed to domes based on availability.
